A 2-Day Journey Across Mfangano, Bird Island & Takawiri
There’s something truly magical about escaping to the islands — where time slows down, the lake speaks in whispers, and the stars seem to shine just a little brighter. Our recent two-day, one-night island camping adventure took us from Mbita Town to Mfangano Island, Bird Island, and the stunning white sands of Takawiri. With a group of 10 enthusiastic travelers — including international guests from Spain — this wasn’t just a trip. It was a deep connection to nature, culture, and community.
🚢 The Journey Begins: From Mbita to Mfangano
We set off from Mbita Pier aboard a ferry, heading toward the beautiful Mfangano Island. The one-hour ride offered breathtaking views of the Gembe and Kaksingri hills, as well as the nearby islands of Rusinga and Takawiri. Surrounded by the vast waters of Lake Victoria, we embraced the calming sense of peace known as the “blue mind” effect — a moment of mental clarity that only nature can bring.
Upon arrival, we hopped on local motorbikes (bodabodas) for a scenic ride to our campsite — an effort to support local livelihoods and promote sustainable travel.
🏕 Setting Up Camp & Sharing a Local Brunch
After reaching our campsite, we pitched our tents together, building teamwork and a sense of camaraderie. As we settled in, a wholesome brunch was served: lemongrass tea, roasted groundnuts, fresh bread, creamy avocados, and cassava — all grown and prepared locally. It was simple, nourishing, and absolutely delicious.
🌿 Hiking, Sunset Views & Campfire Stories
Later in the afternoon, we went on a guided hike across Mfangano Island, soaking in the stunning landscapes, traditional homesteads, and warm greetings from local villagers. After a few hours of exploration, we returned to our campsite just in time for a beautiful sundowner by the beach.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, we gathered around a campfire, enjoyed good music, and shared stories while grilling meat under the stars. Dinner featured a delicious spread of omena (silverfish), Nile perch, and free-range chicken, all prepared with local flavors and hospitality. The evening flowed with laughter, storytelling, and a sense of deep connection before we settled into our tents for the night.
🌱 Day Two: Giving Back & Island Hopping
The next morning, we woke early to pack, help with breakfast, and participate in a meaningful activity: planting and donating fruit trees to our host family and the local community as part of our conservation efforts.
We then boarded a traditional canoe to Bird Island, a haven for birdwatchers, where we spotted various species in their natural habitat. From there, we cruised to the idyllic Takawiri Island, known for its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. We swam, relaxed, and interacted with local fishermen — even learning a few traditional fishing techniques.
After a refreshing lunch back on Mfangano, we picked up our luggage and boarded the Waterbus to return to Mbita, filled with memories and stories to share.
